The man brings a couple of buddies with him. The first day, they eat out of one mans pack (3 rations). The next morning, that buddy leaves with his remaining ration and heads home. The other two continue on, eating 2 more rations. The next morning, the other buddy leaves with his remaining 2 rations and makes the 2 day trek back home. The man then continues to grandma's with his own 4 rations, which will last the the 4 days left in his trip.
